Job description
Your impact at Movares
Make switch heating smarter and save energy on the railway.
What you will do at Movares
you analyze weather data and data from switch heating and investigate correlations;
you investigate how a predictive control system can reduce energy consumption;
you develop and test a control system for smarter management of switch heating;
you investigate whether the control system is technically applicable within a programmable controller;
you map out the potential energy savings and feasibility of your solution.
Switch heating keeps railway points free of snow and ice, but consumes a lot of energy in the process. You will investigate how we can tackle this more intelligently with a control system that takes current and expected weather conditions into account. You will analyze practical data, develop a suitable solution, and investigate with ProRail and other experts how it can work in practice.
This is you at Movares
For this vacancy, you bring:
you are pursuing a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Systems & Control, and have experience with control engineering and data analysis;
you can program and are interested in developing and testing technical control systems;
you are analytical: you critically examine data, recognize correlations, and translate results into well-founded advice;
you are investigational: you ask targeted questions, test different solutions, and draw conclusions from your results.
An internship at Movares is a kickstart to your career, and for several reasons. You can count on excellent guidance from your internship supervisor, your team, and campus recruiter Noortje. Additionally, you will join a group of like-minded individuals. Every year, we welcome between 30 and 40 interns. You will meet them during the monthly meetings of Movares Backstage, where connecting with others is paramount. Sometimes you will have lunch together or visit a project. Other months, a substantive session is planned, and you will learn, for example, how to present or advise more effectively.
And as a member of Young Movares, our youth association, there are also regular fun activities on your agenda. Furthermore, every second Tuesday of the month, you can join the Café van de Toekomst: an inspiration session where you will be updated on topics and projects relevant to our organization together with your colleagues. And that's not all: you can make use of our own Academy with over 3,000 different learning paths, training courses, and e-learning modules.
What you get at Movares
At Movares, you will work on a challenging assignment with ample opportunities for self-development. There is a pleasant and convivial atmosphere, you will get an inside look at a leading consultancy and engineering firm, you will have plenty of room for your own initiative, and you will receive good guidance. The duration and start date can be determined in consultation. Furthermore, you will receive:
an attractive compensation of €550 based on full-time employment;
room to find your ideal work-life balance;
great colleagues and a graduation workplace in the heart of Utrecht.
And there is more. Because graduating at Movares also means:
contributing to a cleaner world, as you are interning at the first company in the Netherlands with a Zero Waste certificate;
becoming a member of Young Movares, the youth association where you learn from and with other young colleagues.
Your team at Movares
For you as a Systems & Control graduation intern, there is a place in our Integral Design department within the Installations team.
Within this team, colleagues with various technical backgrounds collaborate on reliable and sustainable installations for the railway. A number of colleagues are involved in the smarter and more energy-efficient control of switch heating. You will work with experts in installation and railway technology and will have contact with ProRail and a switch heating supplier. The atmosphere is practical and substantive: you will have the space to conduct your own research, develop ideas, and discuss your results with colleagues. This way, you will immediately see how your knowledge of control engineering and data contributes to a concrete railway issue.
