Technology plays a crucial role in protecting our freedom. At the Technology department of the Materiel Logistics Command Land, we know all about this, as we are responsible for the materiel of the Defense. As a first technical specialist, you will use your technical knowledge and experience to contribute to the work of our armed forces.
As a first technical specialist, you will perform tests and are responsible for (complex) specialist maintenance work on (parts of) one or more components from various systems, such as trucks, armored vehicles, and ground equipment. You will have varied work, as one moment you will perform technical research and analyze malfunctions and defects, and the next you will ensure preventive, corrective, and modificative maintenance. The next day, you will maintain tools, machines, and equipment or advise others on technical aspects or quality standards.
In addition to monitoring time and quality, you will continuously pay attention to the guidelines regarding quality assurance and control in your work. You will ensure that the delivered product meets the agreed-upon requirements and will deliver good craftsmanship. You are the go-to person for in-depth technical questions. Not only for colleagues, but also for MBO students. You will also provide advice on the use, purchase, and/or replacement of resources and materials.
Furthermore, you are the specialist, advisor, and developer in your field. You ensure that you are and remain up-to-date with developments and conduct targeted research into technical developments that are important for your work. You also provide maintenance advice and support within the Technology department and to other maintenance companies, both within and outside Defense. Giving instructions and conducting demonstrations are part of your work, as is supporting newly built prototypes. And occasionally, you may perform work that belongs to another job level.
Job Requirements
- You have an MBO 4 diploma in a technical field.
- You have followed training courses in applied techniques and a system-specific training in your field.
- You have extensive experience in the field of technology.
- You have experience with advising, supporting, guiding, and knowledge transfer in a broad sense.
- You have good command of the German and English languages.
- You preferably have knowledge of vehicle electronics.
- You have a high degree of independence, but can also work well in a team.
- You are broadly deployable and results-oriented.
- You have a critical attitude regarding the quality of your work.
- You have a strong sense of responsibility and are customer-oriented and service-minded.

Defense has good secondary employment conditions. From 2025, Defense employees will no longer receive their holiday allowance and year-end bonus as separate payments but will accrue them monthly through the Individual Choice Budget (IKB). The IKB for Defense employees amounts to a total of 16.33 percent of the salary. With the IKB, Defense employees can decide for themselves when, on what, and how much budget they spend on time, money, or fiscal facilities. This can be up to the maximum monthly accrued budget.
The IKB can be used for:
- A maximum of 15 percent of the salary can be used monthly for the exchange of commuting allowances;
- The monthly difference between the contribution to the costs of own transport for commuting and the fiscal maximum;
- A bicycle for personal use, including bicycle accessories and bicycle insurance;
- A computer that can also be used for work or study, including computer accessories and computer insurance;
- A battery or electrical parts for a bicycle;
- The payment of union membership fees.
- Defense expects to further expand the possibilities of the IKB in the future.
- Secondary employment conditions include up to 75% paid parental leave (under conditions), study facilities, extensive sports facilities, an additional leave arrangement for seniors, and a commuting allowance.
Special Provisions
A security investigation (VGB) is part of the application process.
It is necessary that you, as a civilian applicant, have Dutch nationality. The ability to present a Certificate of Conduct (VOG) is a condition for employment. In addition, a security investigation and reference check may be part of the selection procedure. This involves a background check on criminal records and financial matters, which takes an average of 8 weeks.
Selection Process:

This work is primarily carried out by non-military employees. Together, continuous efforts are made to improve maintenance, logistics, procurement, and financial processes.
Technology Department
The Technology Department performs specialist maintenance on (armored) vehicles and other major materiel of the armed forces. This primarily takes place at the workshop in Leusden, but also at satellite locations in Dongen, Almelo, Woensdrecht, Stroe, and Amersfoort. The Department also develops new (weapon) systems and products, provides technical expertise and advice to users, and manages the introduction of new systems.
In addition, there are several specialisms, such as creating models and training materials, and testing and proving vehicles. The expertise center for Additive Manufacturing is also housed within the Technology Department.
